Winter Garden Landscape Design - February 16, 2012

There are a lot of options when it comes to designing your backyard landscape. Many perennial gardens do not do well in the winter and shut down leaving you with a barren landscape looking like a graveyard out of A Nightmare Before Christmas. Not attractive for a quarter of the year.

Fortunately, there are solutions and Sara and Ron Malone's of Petaluma, California, have come up with a few of their own. Featured on www.gardendesign.com's "My Garden", the Malone's have adjusted what they planted to have a garden that still speaks to aesthetics, even in the middle of winter. how did they do it? Well, let's take a look-see shall we?

The use of deciduous trees and shrubs, conifers, broadleaved evergreens and grasses are all good selections to create a foliage garden that stand up to the harsher conditions that winter brings.

According to Sara, "Some of the plants that look best in winter’s light include Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Citriodora’ and Thuja plicata ‘Sunshine.’ Luma apiculata and Rhamnus ‘Fine Line’ produce gorgeous winter fruit." Sara states that she feels that winter gardens are about structure and foliage, not just a selection of evergreens that do well during the winter months.

Adding a variety of ground foliage adds a glow to the garden and plants like Juniperus conferta 'All Gold,' Acer palmatum 'Pung kil,' Hebes pimeloides 'Quicksilver,' and Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca pendula' add a nice variety of color and texture to an otherwise drab a dreary winter garden. These plants show that life does exist during the cold months and that color can be present when most other plants are dormant.

So while your perennials are sleeping and waiting for the sun to start shining in a few months, there are a few options to help you create a nice winter garden viewing experience. And as always, any time you add a custom outdoor fire pit to a garden, you can enjoy your garden all year round.

So when you are ready to invest in an outdoor burning system, we here at Warming Trends will be happy to help you out. Call us today! 1-866-556-5255.
