How to Make Your Backyard Your Vacation Destination - December 12, 2011

With the economy down in the dumps and penny pinching on the rise, backyards are becoming a safe haven vacation destination for many. You don't need to drive there and spend money on gas, you don't need to pay for hotels, or flights or even a train ride. You simply open your door and viola, you are there!

So how do you make your outdoor living room comfortable, relaxing and functional? Good lighting, fire pits with seating in the round and an outdoor kitchen area.

If your wooden deck is still in good condition, you can make it look brand new by sanding and restaining it. Neutral colors are usually a good way to go, but make sure that you are keeping the color scheme in line with the exterior of your home.

You may think about installing some accent lighting around the deck, patio and garden as well. The effect really helps the exterior pop at night and you can highlight certain aspects of your home and garden as well.

Umbrellas are a nice way to escape from the heat of summer as well as provide a bit of privacy if you have neighboring second and third story homes for neighbors.

Seating is essential! Especially if you choose to install a custom fire pit or fire bowl in your backyard. Make sure you purchase weatherproof outdoor furniture, this way you won't have to worry about having to cover everything up when the weather turns, and it will extend the lifetime of the furniture itself.

An outdoor kitchen area is always a good idea and who doesn't love the taste of food prepared over a nice gas or charcoal grill? A grill is essential and a food prep area will keep you from running in and out from the kitchen, you will have a space for all the fixings right there next to the grill.
