Fire Pit Hazards Prompt Rule Changes - May 20, 2011

So the craze about fire pits is no joke. People are investing in fire pits or hearths for their outdoor entertainment spaces more than ever, however this means that you need to be aware of your local fire burning laws (laws vary from state to state and county to county, so be sure to check with local officials on the matter) or you could be slapped with a fine.

For example, regarding local laws, last year San Francisco upgraded their fire pit laws because of the sheer population and how the city is structured, with house upon house upon house all throughout the city. Backyard wood burning fires can spew embers and smoke into neighbors yards and affect their living situation. San Francisco then changed their open fire pit laws to require homeowners to acquire a "fire burning permit" and that no open flame may be operated with "15 feet of a structure, combustible material or property line."

Some local fire officials feel that fire pits are a hazard, but local the local fire commission feels otherwise stating that they don't feel that house fires are started because of backyard blazes and have not seen any evidence to contradict their belief.

More importantly than the local laws, people should just adhere to fire pit safety tips to avoid the worst possible scenario, a wildfire or setting your own, or neighbors, house on fire.

Better yet, why not go with a natural gas or propane fire burning system over wood? There is less soot and carbon released during the burning process, so it's safer and better for the environment because no embers are released into the air. You can control the flame height and burning capacity with a gas burning system, and you can shut it off with the flip of a switch unlike wood burning fires. If these aren't convincing enough reasons, here's a blog we released a few months ago on why "Gas Fire Pits are Superior to Wood Burning Fire Pits."

Ok all, enjoy the weekend, and be safe with your fire pit! Until next time, we here at Warming Trends hope you "bring a warm glow to your patio" this weekend.
