Fall Landscaping Ideas - September 16, 2011Now that the warmth of summer is fading into the refreshingly cool season of fall, it's time to contemplate how to add some flare and color to your garden and outdoor living space with the changing of the leaves. There are some great ways to add color and depth to your garden. I came across some interesting concepts on the Better Homes & Gardens website.
1) By using shrubs and small trees varied throughout your garden, you can add depth to the space by pairing tall and short together to create an illusion that your garden is much larger than it actually is. You can see how this golden Japanese maple makes you want to explore what is on the other side. 2) Create texture in your garden. By planting trees with texture such as Evergreens or Douglas Firs, you can create a nice backdrop for other smaller leafier bushes, flowers and shrubs.
3) Plant various habits. What does this mean? It means the natural shape that certain plants take on; some and narrow and tall, some low and firm, round and bushy, drooping branches, etc. By planting a variety of plants that take on different shapes, you will be able to fill space in different manners and create a more interesting garden. 4) Include structure into your garden plot. Stone pavers for walkways, low retaining walls, a fence or even a pergola can create sectioning within the garden itself and create a nice flow through the space.
5)Entice the Senses: Include fire and water features within the garden space. Custom fire pits are a great way to extend your time spent outdoors in the fall and the flame is a natural hypnotist to the senses. Pairing this with a pond, waterfall, or bubbling brook will create a sense of larger than life and really captivate the entire mind, body and soul. There are other landscaping ideas on the Better Homes & Gardens website, like adding an unusual plant to the garden, but i just focused on these five.
