A Floating Fire Pit??? - June 27, 2011

Yes, that's right, I thought the same thing....a floating fire pit??? Well, it's true.

An Ontario entrepreneur, Ron Dixon, loves fishing, bar-b-que-ing and speing time with the family in the water. According to an article in the The Strathroy Age Dispatch, later reprinted in the London Free Press, a few years ago Dixon was hanging out in the water off his boat and thought "it'd be great to have a fire out here."

Being a welder for over 27 years, he went home and crafted a lightweight, leak-proof prototype out of aluminum, adhered it to a floating pontoon and named it the Firebuoy. Dixon states that it is safe to handle because it is cooled by the water. Dixon claims that it is a great alternative for campers and fishermen as they can cook right on the water next to their boat and do not have to return to shore to stay well fed. It's great for kids too, they can grill up hot dogs and toast marshmallows, all while in the comfort of the cool water.

He even checked with the Canadian Coast Guard and the Ministry of the Environment to see if it violated local burning restriction laws. It did not.

Currently the Firebuoy is up for a patent and Dixon has sold some units on his website. Dixon states the Firebuoy is still a side project at this point and his main issue is marketing at this point.
